A jar full of whisky contains 40% alcohol. A part of this whisky is replaced by another containing 19% alcohol and now the percentage of alcohol was found to be 26%. The quantity of whisky replaced is:
1
3
2
3
2
5
3
5
Answer: Option
Explanation:

By the rule of alligation, we have:

Strength of first jar Strength of 2nd jar
40% Mean
Strength
26%
19%
7 14

So, ratio of 1st and 2nd quantities = 7 : 14 = 1 : 2

Required quantity replaced = 2
3

We can see that the ratio of the two types of alcohol in the mixture is 1:2.

So alcohol 1 is 1/3 part.

Hence, the quantity of whiskey = 1 - (1/3).

= 3-1 / 3.

2/3.

After we get the ratio as 1:2, how did we get 2/3?

Ya. I too confused with the result as 2/3. Can any one explain how we will get 2/3?

I think the answer of the quantity of whisky taken out will be 1/3, but as per the question, the quantity of the whisky replaced or added will be 2/3.

Whisky taken out from the jar 1 is 1/3, but the whisky replaced or added is 2/3. I think now you can understand?

I am confused from this stick method.

I think this is the easy method.

If the 40% will alcohol is a1 = 40% and another 19% is a2 = 19%.

And in the resultant is A = 26%.

Any solution Alligation is given as:

Average A = (n1a1*n2a2)/(n1+n2).

n1:n2 = (a1-A)/(A-a2).

n1:n2 = (40-26):(26-19) then the result is 14:7 that will give 2:1.
