A jar full of whisky contains 40% alcohol. A part of this whisky is replaced by another containing 19% alcohol and now the percentage of alcohol was found to be 26%. The quantity of whisky replaced is:
Answer: Option
Explanation:
By the rule of alligation, we have:
Strength of first jar Strength of 2nd jar | ||
40% | Mean Strength 26% | 19% |
7 | 14 |
So, ratio of 1st and 2nd quantities = 7 : 14 = 1 : 2

I think the solution is wrong because 2/3 is the amount of alcohol the 2nd mixture contains which has been combined with the 1st mixture. So 2/3 can't be the whole mixture.

It should be 1/3 right? because in the question it was asked that quantity of whisky replaced not alcohol.

Quantity replaced in 1st jar is nothing but quantity added from 2nd jar. So, from the answer, the ratio is 1 : 2 which means the total number of parts (1 + 2) is 3.
Therefore the quantity of whiskey replaced is 2/3.
Therefore the quantity of whiskey replaced is 2/3.

Here one confusion is about 2/3.
Final mixture should be in 1:2 proportion in which A is 1/3 part and B is 2/3 part. Here B is introduced in mixture by replacing A so Replaced quantity is 2/3.
Hope this can help. Thanks

1/3 is the wrong answer.
As per Prakash' method, 2/3* 100 is right but it is the amount of alcohol and 1-2/3=1/3 is the answer of whisky which has 19% alcohol. In a question, they told that whisky which has 40% alcohol replaced by whisky of 19 % alcohol so its prove that 1/3 is the answer of whisky which has 19% & 40% combined alcohol. But in a problem, they asked replaced whisky means whisky which has 40% alcohol. So please tell anyone in detail what is the answer still I am not getting the answer.
