A jar full of whisky contains 40% alcohol. A part of this whisky is replaced by another containing 19% alcohol and now the percentage of alcohol was found to be 26%. The quantity of whisky replaced is:
Answer: Option
Explanation:
By the rule of alligation, we have:
Strength of first jar Strength of 2nd jar | ||
40% | Mean Strength 26% | 19% |
7 | 14 |
So, ratio of 1st and 2nd quantities = 7 : 14 = 1 : 2

the vessel contains 40% alcohol initially and then some of it is replaced by 19% alcohol and final is 26%. so if uve to find the strength ratio, it is (26-19):(40-26). so it becomes 7:14 i.e. 1:2. and if we are reqd to find quantity of second one, so its 2/(1+2) i.e. 2/3.

According to mixture allegation rule.. we have place the chaeper one on left side and the dearer one on right side... why here that rule is not followed
acoording to that 14:7 comes..so lastly 2:1 is the ratio and
and the first jar is compared s 2/3 parts (i.e)2:3 .. is this correct ?? plz answer this !!!

@coolman,
We can see that the ratio of the two types of alcohol in the mixture is 1:2. So alcohol1 is 1/3 part.
Hence the quantity of whisky replaced =1-1/3=2/3

Let x part of whisky removed.
Whisky removed = 40x/100.
Whisky added = 19x/100.
Total change in whisky 40/100 - 40x/100 + 19x/100.
After Equating,
40/100 - 40x/100 + 19x/100 = 26/100.
Or, x = 2/3.
Whisky removed = 40x/100.
Whisky added = 19x/100.
Total change in whisky 40/100 - 40x/100 + 19x/100.
After Equating,
40/100 - 40x/100 + 19x/100 = 26/100.
Or, x = 2/3.

40% alcohol.
40% is replaced by 19%.
Means 40-19 = 21.
% of alcohol was found to be 26% means 40-26 = 14.
So ratio is 14:21 = 2:3
Answer = 2/3.

What is wrong in this approach?
Let us assume that there is x L of whiskey and we are replacing y L of whiskey.
Therefore the quantity of alcohol is:
(40/100)x-(40/100)y+(19/100)y = (26/100)(x-y).
Let us assume that there is x L of whiskey and we are replacing y L of whiskey.
Therefore the quantity of alcohol is:
(40/100)x-(40/100)y+(19/100)y = (26/100)(x-y).

We can see that the ratio of the two types of alcohol in the mixture is 1:2.
So alcohol 1 is 1/3 part.
Hence, the quantity of whiskey = 1 - (1/3).
= 3-1 / 3.
2/3.
So alcohol 1 is 1/3 part.
Hence, the quantity of whiskey = 1 - (1/3).
= 3-1 / 3.
2/3.
