Discussion Forum : Syllogism - Syllogism 1 (Q.No. 14)
Directions to Solve

In each of the following questions two statements are given and these statements are followed by two conclusions numbered (1) and (2). You have to take the given two statements to be true even if they seem to be at variance from commonly known facts. Read the conclusions and then decide which of the given conclusions logically follows from the two given statements, disregarding commonly known facts.

Give answer:

  • (A) If only (1) conclusion follows
  • (B) If only (2) conclusion follows
  • (C) If either (1) or (2) follows
  • (D) If neither (1) nor (2) follows and
  • (E) If both (1) and (2) follow.

14.

Statements: All the flowers are leaves. Some leaves are birds.

Conclusions:

  1. Some birds are flowers.
  2. Some leaves are flowers.

Only (1) conclusion follows
Only (2) conclusion follows
Either (1) or (2) follows
Neither (1) nor (2) follows
Both (1) and (2) follow
Answer: Option
Explanation:

Only (2) conclusion follows.

But in this q, I feel that the second diagram doesnt hold good! its because, the given statement is: "some leaves are birds" and not, "some birds are leaves".

In my opinion the right ans might be option-E. Because it is given dt all d flowers are leaves, that indicate some leaves are flowers. Again given that some leaves are birds. By combine both this statement it is clearly pointing that some birds are flowers; which is written in conclusion-1. So both conclusion 1 & 2 are satisfied. So right ans is option E.

We have to consider both conditions na. Conculusion 1 may follows, clearly conculusion 2 is following. But answer will be both were corret in my view.

Ya. you all are right.. but we should only consider the conclusion which is exactly true... when we could arise the two possible venn diagrams , you should not consider that conclusion so leave that, then you start to see next conclusion, it satisies.so ans is 2.

Ya Sundar is correct.

Conclusion 1: Some birds are flowers.

As per the 1st diagram this conclusion fails to satisfy the given statements. So conclusion 1 not follows the given statements.

Conclusion 2: Some leaves are flowers.

This conclusion satisfies given the statements in both cases as per given in the diagram 1st and 2nd diagrams.

How to find the conclusion based on rules.

In conclusion 2:some leaves are flowers.

the middle term (leaves) should not be in the conclusion. so,i think E is the answer.

@Sharanya

Based on the given statements we have to draw the Venn diagrams for all possible cases.

I hope you understand this. Have a nice day!

As per the 2nd diagram the 1st statement is also true.

Can any one help in this?
