Actually it should be Refusing (from my point of view). Please do let me know if I am wrong. Help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Jasgowda said: (Nov 5, 2010)
Yes the answer should be refusing, antonym of obey is disobey. Meaning of disobey is to refuse.

Sundar said: (Jan 26, 2011)
@All

I think the given answer 'Ordering' is Correct.

Just think in reverse, what is the antonym for 'Refusing'.

Is it 'OBEYING' ?

No. The best antonyms for Refuse/Refusing are:

=> accept, allow, approve, consent, grant, offer, ok, sanction.

Therefore 'Ordering' is correct.

Kindly give me your suggestions if I'm wrong.

Reet said: (Mar 26, 2011)
I agree with you Sundar.

Murali said: (Mar 29, 2011)
I think refusing is correct as per my knowledge.

Nikitha said: (Aug 5, 2011)
Yes, refusing must be correct!

Vani said: (Aug 10, 2011)
Jasgowda explanation is correct.

Semugabi Godwin said: (Sep 10, 2011)
According to me, refusing is the correct answer because it is the exact opposite of the word accepting and yet accepting is a synonym of the word obeying. Please let me know if am incorrect.

Sundar said: (Sep 15, 2011)
@All

Antonym of Refusing = ____ ?

It must be one of the following right ?

Accept, allow, approve, consent, grant, offer, ok, sanction.

Now, Antonym of Refusing = Obeying ? Is it correct ???

Simha said: (Sep 20, 2011)
Refuse is correct answer.

Rahul S said: (Sep 24, 2011)
Obeying means to follow someone order
Ordering means :To give someone order
Refusing :to deny someone order (is correct)

Sundar said: (Sep 24, 2011)
@All

You just ask someone "What is the antonym of Refusing?".

By his/her reply you will understand what I tried to explain many time in this forum.

Kinan Saleem said: (Sep 25, 2011)
Guys I m confused I think it must be refusing, but Sundar is also correct upto one extent, so what I can do now tell me?

Venkat said: (Oct 8, 2011)
I think order is correct
e.g. question----->answer similarly order--->obey

Harry Pielago said: (Oct 17, 2011)
Actually both obeying and refusing maybe correct. If you are the one to order then you are not the one who will obey. So it is also acceptable. But if this is a test in an entrance exam the answer should be refusing.

Banu said: (Jan 21, 2012)
Contradiction is the right answer.

Fariha said: (Mar 23, 2012)
I think Sundar is correct.

Hrutvi said: (May 23, 2012)
@Banu please explain contradiction.

Amit said: (May 30, 2012)
I think the ordering answer is wrong here. The correct answer is refusing

Rabecca said: (Jun 29, 2012)
The opposite of obeying is disobedience and in this case the closest answer is refusing. Correct me if I am wrong.

Sadhan said: (Aug 28, 2012)
Simply the antonym of obeying is refusing

Sst said: (Oct 10, 2012)
Obey means follow the orders given by one. I. E to obey.
Therefore disobey means not to follow orders or given instructions.
So obeying * ordering.

Pema said: (Aug 1, 2013)
@All. Don't get confused by the answer given above because I think it is wrong. There is slight mistake with the answer given. The correct answer for antonym of obeying is refusing. If you think I am wrong you can refer any book or browse, for "antonym of obeying, " you will get many answer including refusing but you won't get "ordering" as the answer.

Vikato said: (Aug 12, 2013)
@Sundar your explanation is right but not valid here, since we are to find the antonyms of 'OBEYING' and not "REFUSING".

Aahoon said: (Aug 25, 2013)
Someone gives order to be obeyed by others so opposite of obey must be order.

Vaibhav said: (Dec 5, 2013)
We are asked for the opposite of obeying then its must be refusing and how should we consider from refusing to obeying.

Mohana said: (Dec 31, 2013)
In my point of view.

OBEYING means accepting others opinion.

So the opposite is refusing.

Asmita said: (Apr 3, 2014)
Obeying means obey orders.

And ordering means give orders that is exactly opposite to obeying.

Md Adil said: (Jun 6, 2014)
Obeying means - accept the order.

Ordering means - give the order.

Both are opposite to each other means ordering is right answer.

Akash said: (Aug 30, 2014)
Yes I also think the answer should be refusing because ordering does not make any sense.

Hemanth said: (Sep 22, 2014)
Yes the answer is refusing because.

Obey means to do something.

Refuse means to oppose something.

So the answer may be refusing.

Kindly say me if I had done anything wrong.

Nehasarathe said: (Nov 28, 2014)
Its answer is refusing. Because disobey is its opposite and its meaning is refusing.

Teja said: (Dec 15, 2014)
@Sundar your explanation is correct but according to @Vikato's question we can conclude that refuse is correct.

Peter said: (May 21, 2015)
Surely disobey is the opposite of obey.

Neha said: (Jun 27, 2015)
@Sundar: If you are trying to explain with the help of options, then antonym of 'ordering' can be 'REQUESTING' and may not be not 'obeying' (in my opinion). The appropriate opposite of obey is disobey and disobey-refuse.

Sanjay said: (Jun 29, 2015)
How it could be?

Its ok refuse is not an actual antonym of obeying. But how ordering would be antonym for obeying.

Its totally irrelevant. The question represents the high range of antonymous words.

Thus I think refuse is correct.

Ratnakar Pathak said: (Aug 9, 2015)
If we think in the way that obeying means to follow the order and ordering means to give the order then we can say ordering us correct answer.

Aishik said: (Sep 5, 2015)
Why not contradicting?

Md. Rashel Miah said: (Sep 5, 2015)
I think that obeying refers to abiding by someone's order or rules and regulations and refusing refers to refuse someone's order or rules and regulations.

So, in my point of view the authentic antonym of obeying is refusing.

Sathya said: (Sep 5, 2015)
I think the refuse is the correct answer.

Mubashir said: (Sep 14, 2015)
Refuse is the best antonym.

Abhijit said: (Sep 14, 2015)
When you ORDER someone. What do you expect. He should OBEY your ORDER.

Its Like.

ORDER - OBEY.

REQUEST - DENY.

And so on. I may be wrong correct me if so.

Varnapriya said: (Sep 22, 2015)
I think refusing may be correct because if we don't obey certain things we refuse it.

Karthik said: (Oct 22, 2015)
Here it clearly says REFUSE is antonym of Obey! So answer is refusing.

Unknown said: (Mar 12, 2016)
Refusing obviously because obeying is the synonym of ordering.

Subh said: (Apr 1, 2016)
Refusing is not used in case of order only. It also used in help, asking, offering, etc. So @Sundar is true, ordering is correct.

Atul said: (Jul 15, 2016)
Think like this ordering leads to obeying but refusing means denying the order.
As per antonyms context, it has to be refusing. The question asked for the antonym of ordering not refusing so accordingly refusing is apt.

Correct me, if I am right or wrong.

Akhil said: (Jul 23, 2016)
The answer should be refusing.

Gaurav said: (Jul 28, 2016)
Refusing is correct.

Eg. Ordering means to follow someones order.

Refusing means to deny someones order.

Poorni said: (Aug 6, 2016)
Obey> following someone order.

Order>giving order.

Sonam Sharma said: (Aug 7, 2016)
I thing refusing is correct.

Manish Singh said: (Aug 8, 2016)
When one person ORDERS other person OBEYS.

Lalit Rawat said: (Aug 16, 2016)
It should be refusing for sure!

Stranger said: (Aug 17, 2016)
@All.

Refusing must be correct.

No need to be confused and go to answer.

If there are two parties/ person opposite to each other and.

They have some offer/order then if one 'obey' what will do opposite party/person.

Simply 'refuse'.

If there is not refusing, then we can think about ordering as an antonym. But here it's refusing.

Thanks and give suggestion if any.

Shanky said: (Aug 24, 2016)
I think refusing is more appropriate.

Kavitha said: (Aug 24, 2016)
I am not clear about it.

Rajeshwaree said: (Aug 31, 2016)
I accept with @Sundar because Obey meaning we are accepting and then we follow. In spite of following, we are ordering is the correct antonym. In case if ordering is not there refuse is the correct answer, Am I right?

Gayathri said: (Sep 2, 2016)
I think refusing is the correct answer.

Vishven said: (Sep 10, 2016)
Ordering is correct.

Because ordering is related to not doing that work.

And obeying means doing that work.

Refusing is all about alternate thing person can refuse and my be he or she not refuse!

So I think the answer is ordering.

[if someone gives me an order than I may obey and I may refuse].

Correct me if I am wrong and give a suggestion.

Renuga Devi said: (Oct 24, 2016)
I think the answer might be refusing.

Lakshmi said: (Nov 23, 2016)
Contradicting is correct answer because Obeying means agreeing for whatever other says and contradicting means countering (opposing).

Dillip said: (Nov 30, 2016)
The answer should be refusing.

Ary Pawar said: (Dec 15, 2016)
As per my knowledge refusing is right.

Amar said: (Dec 25, 2016)

Obey>order.

Aalok Shah said: (Feb 26, 2017)
@All.

Ordering is the correct answer.

Vjay said: (Mar 5, 2017)
Obey means follow someone's order.

Order means give an order to someone.

If one follows the order and other orders to follow means they both are opposite to each other,

So I go with Order.

Jay said: (Mar 16, 2017)
Yes, refusing is the right answer. Obey means you follow the order. So refusing is correct.

Abimbola said: (Apr 5, 2017)
Refusing should be the right answer since the opposite of obeying is disobeying and d synonym of disobeying is actually refusing.

Shivam Kumar said: (Apr 5, 2017)
Correct answer should be "refusing".

Kuldeep Sharma said: (Apr 7, 2017)
Yes, correct answer is refusing.

Harees said: (Apr 19, 2017)
The Correct answer is refusing.

Rasel Babu said: (May 9, 2017)
(Ordering, Following) has not the negative meaning, (as I know).

"Contradicting, Refusing".

The answer must be from this 2 words,

Again if "OBEYING" get the meaning respect or modest action then it will be Refusing.

If "OBEYING" get the meaning flowing low of government action then it will be Contradicting.

I think sometimes this 2 words may be the answer (sometimes).

In this question it's answer should be "Refusing".

Nisha said: (May 29, 2017)

Delendra said: (Jul 24, 2017)
Give me an example of contradicting.

Farhad said: (Jul 26, 2017)
Refusing and contradicting are synonym words. If you choice 'Refusing' then you have to consider 'contradicting' too. The best answer is 'ordering'.

Buhari Muhammad Bello said: (Jul 26, 2017)
You just have to take it inversely as you are ordered to do something and you eventually obeyed. Simple.

Goshia Anjum said: (Aug 1, 2017)
Opposite of obey must be disobey. So refusing should be correct. But in sense of analogy order is correct for obeying.

Rahul said: (Aug 4, 2017)
Antonyms for obeying.

Decline, deny, disregard, forget, ignore, leave, miss, neglect, overlook, Refuse, reject, argue, ask, differ, disagree, disallow, disapprove, disobey, dispute, dissent, fail, object, oppose.

Navjeet Singh said: (Aug 23, 2017)
Refusing is the right option as this is the only word which sounds diffrent meaning amongst all four words.

Abhijit Tripathy said: (Aug 27, 2017)
I'm quite sure it's refusing. Antonym of obey is disobey which means refuse not order.

Mayank Gandhi said: (Sep 10, 2017)
I think we need to find the exact opposite of the word not negative of the word.

For example, opposite of pull will be a push.
And negative of pull is on pull.
I think every body is getting confused in opposite and negative.

Please correct me if I'm wrong.

Ankush said: (Sep 15, 2017)
It's refusing only. As in here,

Synonym of obey is "take orders", and if one does not "take order" it means he or she is "refusing" to "take order".

Therefore "refusing is an antonym of obeying".

On contrary, it can also be taken as "giving orders" as in "ordering" and "taking order" as in "obeying".

But we are not searching for an antonym of "ordering", as question demands us to search for exact opposite or antonym of "obeying". If the question, would've asked antonym "ordering", then "obeying" will be the answer out of the given options.

Therefore "refusing" is the correct option.

Ranajn said: (Jan 16, 2018)
Refusing is the right answer.

Shivanand Kolli said: (Jan 16, 2018)
Ordering is correct answer.

Rahul Kumar said: (Feb 6, 2018)
Antonym of Refusing is Accepting. So here it should be ordering.

Nitish Kumar said: (Feb 27, 2018)
From my point of view, refusing should be correct answer.

Akshata Aravalli said: (Mar 22, 2018)

Nisha said: (Apr 3, 2018)

Arunkumar said: (Apr 19, 2018)
Yeah, I think refusing is the correct answer.

Lakshmi said: (Jun 8, 2018)
Finally, what is correct answer refuse or order.

Ashwathi said: (Jun 30, 2018)
ANSWER : REFUSING.

Obeying = to follow or accept something.
Refusing= to disobey or agree to not do something.
Ordering could have been an antonym of requesting.

Swaroop Kalyan Tripathy said: (Jul 27, 2018)
Refuse is correct.

Sajan Agrawal said: (Jul 28, 2018)
I think refusing is correct.

Ela said: (Jul 30, 2018)
Ordering is correct.

Order - giving the order.
Obey - taking the order.

Sandeep Sandhu said: (Sep 21, 2018)
I Think Refuse is the Right Answer.

Because Obey Means - accepting someone order. Its opposite should be Disobey. So,

Synonyms of Disobey is Refuse, resist, oppose etc, i.e A Big No to *ORDER.

If I am wrong, Please suggest a right Answer.

Manjari said: (Nov 17, 2018)
I think Refuse is the correct answer.

Manjari said: (Nov 20, 2018)
Obeying - To follow someone's instructions.
Ordering - To give instructions.
Refusing - To not follow someone's instructions.

Pavan K said: (Dec 27, 2018)
@Manjari.

I think obeying means refuse, and obey means follow someone instructions, so ordering is correct.

Mary Oni said: (Dec 28, 2018)
Ordering is correct, because you obey a command, simply 'order' i.e. command then obey, order then obey, it depends on the aspect from which you are looking at it.

Hari Prasad said: (Jan 8, 2019)
Obeying means accepting.

So, antonym is refusing.

Richa said: (Jan 15, 2019)
The right answer is - ordering, because obeying follows ordering.

Kiran said: (Jan 18, 2019)
Refusing is the correct answer.

Jaynth said: (Jan 30, 2019)
Refuse is the right one.

Vinn said: (May 29, 2019)
Giver-receiver.

Similarly, ordering - obeying.

Hence, I think the given option is correct.

Abimbola said: (May 30, 2019)
I think the answer was chosen in terms of followership (obeying) and leadership (ordering).

Nirmal Kumar said: (Jun 13, 2019)
The answer for OBEYING should be REFUSING. If you search for the antonym of the word OBEYING OR OBEY, you can easily find the word DISOBEY. Moreover if you seach the word in thesaurus for OBEY you cannot find ordering in those list of words.

Krishna said: (Aug 10, 2019)
1. Order : force someone to do, whether they obey it (agree it) or not. Not having a choice.

2. Obey : accepting to do, with willing.
Having choice to choose whether they accept or reject.

3. Refuse : not accepting.
Having choice to choose whether they accept or reject.

So, when it comes to antonym of OBEY it should be REFUSE.
My vote is for REFUSE, Please correct me if I am wrong.

R Shaw said: (Sep 11, 2019)
I think ordering is dubious in meaning _ order to act - order to purchase etc.

Arrange in order, but refusing is denial always and it is more nearest to opposite of obeying.

Zephaniah said: (Sep 15, 2019)
What is the antonym of obey?

Backiyabala said: (Oct 10, 2019)
Obeying means accepting with a polite manner.

Refusing means not accepting.

So, the correct answer is refusing.

Santosh said: (Oct 19, 2019)
As obeying means following the orders given by someone.

So definitely the antonym of obeying will be ordering -means to give orders to someone.

Sahil Kumar Garg said: (Nov 13, 2019)
@All.

Order is right.
Obey - accepting the order.
Order - giving the order.

Manda said: (Nov 24, 2019)
Merriam Websters says that the closest antonym to obeying is refusing.

John Banda said: (Feb 7, 2020)
When you accept it means you have obeyed. Ordering I feel is not the ideal answer.

William said: (Feb 12, 2020)
If I am to consider the real antonym of obeying, the most appropriate answer is disobeyed. I think the order is not the best opposite unless otherwise.

Kamsha said: (Mar 12, 2020)
How ordering possible?

Pavan said: (Apr 2, 2020)
I think obeying is accepting, refusing means disobeying it's correct can anyone suggest me the correct answer?

Diana Tuhumwire said: (Apr 15, 2020)
Refusing should be the right answer.

Jana said: (Jul 6, 2020)
Refuse is correct because obeying means accepting something so opposite to that is refusing.

Taongamo said: (Aug 8, 2020)
Refusing ia the correct answer.

Ordering is irrelevant here.

Obeying means accepting the order and doing it. Ordering means giving some instructions to do something. Suppose if I Order and someone obeys and do it, there is no opposite at all here.

Harshu said: (Aug 14, 2020)
Refusing is the correct answer. Because obeying means follow the instructions here we have an opposite word so refusing is the correct.

Neha said: (Sep 22, 2020)
According to me, the correct answer is ordering because;

Obeying means - to accept the order.

Ordering means- to give the order.

Sanjay said: (Oct 6, 2020)
@All.

I think is that obeying means (to accept the order or to follow the order).

And according to this scenario, the right answer should be refuse means (not follow).

Magbool said: (Jul 16, 2021)
According to me,

Refuse is the EXACT opposite of the word "Obeying".

Please correct me, if I'm wrong.

Sucharitha said: (Aug 28, 2021)
