Tech Mahindra Interview Experience - GMRIT, Rajam, 10th oct., 2016

Posted By : Monica Korada Rating : +87, -3
We had an on-campus drive in our college on 10th October 2016. We were called to have a pre-placement talk which took place around 45 minutes. A total of 470 students appeared for the written test. My slot was around 12:30 in the afternoon. The overall process is like:

1) Written test.
2) Story writing.
2) TR round.
3) HR round.

1) Written test:

We will have 75 questions in this section which is an elimination round. It consists of total 7 sections which have a sectional cutoff of 60%.

Section 1:

English general 1- 10 questions will be given where 6 should be correct. Prepositions, articles, tenses will be given here. It is an easy section. Don't worry.

Section 2:

English general II- consists of 20 questions where 12 should be correct. It is a tough section where scoring marks is a bit tough. questions on synonyms, antonyms, correct phrases will be given. Concentrate more on this section.

Section 3:

English comprehension- a paragraph will be given with five questions in which 3 should be correct.

Section 4:

Aptitude of 11 questions where 7 should be correct. Bits will be little easy but time consuming. Concentrate on profit nd loss, percentages, averages, mixtures and alligations, time and distance, time and work.

Section 5:

Verbal reasoning- 21 questions will be given out of which 12 should be correct. It is the section with highest no. of questions. Bits can be solved easily. Mainly concentrate on series, 6 to 7 bits of series will come. odd man out, coding, decoding, analogies, blood relations.

Section 6:

Verbal reasoning paragraph- a paragraph will be given where 3 questions will be asked out of which 2 should be correct. It is a tough section because questions will be linked to each other. If one bit is made a mistake the rest all will be wrong. So be careful. Mainly, seating arrangements will be give.

And finally Section 7:

Non-verbal reasoning (figures)- 5 questions will be given where 3 should be correct. This section is really very very tough to score and mainly a lot of time taking. Practice a higher level figures like series in figures. Give enough time to solve these questions. As sectional cutoff is there, don't take this section lite. If you score full to full marks in every section and if you have not crossed cutoff in one section also you will be just eliminated. Be careful with every section. Time factor matters a lot. Put an eye on the time while answering questions.
After completion of this written test, the result will be displayed on the screen. If you are through the exam you will get an eye feast message displaying which is happy to see as " CONGRATULATIONS, YOU ARE CONTINUED TO NEXT ROUND" or else it will show as " SORRY!!! THANK YOU FOR ATTEMPTING" That moment decides your next step.

2) Story writing:

Students who are qualified in the written test will only be allowed to write the story writing round. This is the challenging round in the overall process. Many students will be eliminated in this round only. Be very very cautious. An image will be displayed on the screen where you have to write a story within 15 min.

Tips: You should not describe the image. Create a story instantly and write. You can be the character in the story. It is better to write in past tense. Concentrate on grammatical mistakes and spellings. Keep an appropriate title for your story and start writing. 1200 characters will be given which nearly make of two paragraphs. Don't wait for a good story to get into your mind. Start writing whatever you get at the first sight. (I got an image showing the students taking a photograph wearing a graduation day dress. I started writing like "on our graduation day in 2014 we were called to the auditorium to take the certificates. We took many photographs on that day as it was the last day of our college life.. so and so"). Put a fine ending before the timer ends.

The results will be announced in about half an hour. If the shortlisted candidates will be called for the technical round. Story writing is an important round where many people will be eliminated. Be careful. Out of 470 students appeared for written test, only 110 were left after the story writing. In which I'm one of them.

3) TR round:

If you get through the first two rounds, 85% you will be get selected if you have good communication skills. When I attended the interview, as I'm from a CSE background, he directly started asking me the technical questions. Didn't even ask me to introduce myself. He had thrown me a big question to answer like he asked me to say about the subjects starting from C language to Computer Graphics. I started from C, Data structures, Java, Dbms, Computer networks, Operating systems, Theory of computations, Compiler design and Computer graphics saying about what are the topics present, functionality, uses etc. He was well impressed by the way I answered. He had thrown a puzzle on aptitude question which I was unable to answer. But he explained me the logic later. He asked few more questions on OS and Computer networks. I almost answered all the questions. Finally asked about joins in DBMS. I explained. He appreciated me. He cracked a few jokes too. And he immediately said that I'm selected to next level. Happy to hear those words.

4) HR round:

A simple round but important round. Be careful that you may be rejected if you don't perform well here also. He asked me to introduce myself except my educational qualifications. I started with my name, place, achievements, family background, strengths and hobbies. I added a few qualities I have and he was impressed with what I spoke. please speak confidently with what you have. Don't feel ashamed to speak. That one quality you hide may carry a lot of importance. Speak out all about yourself in a professional way. He asked me whether I'm interested in relocation or not. I said yes. He asked me to ask him any question. I asked about my overall performance. With a smiling face, he said  it was good till now and it will be good in future too. He said nice talking to you Monica and I thanked him and left the room.
After everyone's interviews are over nearly about 10:30 pm they bought the final list of selected candidates and announced the student's names. With a lot of tension for some minutes, my name was announced. Totally 63 students were selected in that drive and I'm happy that I'm one among them.

So finally, cracking a job is not that easy or that difficult. Concentrate on basics and work more on English. Frame your resume well and be confident.

All the best. :)
