TCS Interview Experience - Kolkata, October 12, 2017

Posted By : Souvik Sarkar Rating : +45, -9
Hi, I am Souvik Sarkar, currently pursuing the B.Tech degree in CSE from Techno India, Salt Lake, Kolkata. Recently, Tata Consultancy Services had visited our campus for recruitment (23rd September, 2017, Saturday).

For the first time, they had introduced two new sections in the aptitude round (TCS Touchstone), one on multiple choice questions from C and the other on basic C Programming. The format of the paper was as follows:

1. Email writing (10 minutes).
2. Quantitative aptitude (20 problems, 40 minutes).
3. C McQ (10 questions, 20 minutes).
4. C programming (20 minutes).

Those who had an average CGPA of 8.35 (76%) and above till the sixth semester exams and had more than 75% aggregate marks in both tenth and twelfth board exams were exempted from appearing for the Quantitative aptitude section.

A few students had managed to perform well in TCS CodeVita and they were called for a direct interview in the third week of August. Some of them got the job then only, others appeared for the aptitude test with us.

The top 25 students from our department had appeared for an aptitude test in the second week of May. Those who cleared the aptitude test were given an onternship course by TCS. Among those students, who performed well in the onternship were called for direct interview.

Cracking the TCS Touchstone test is not difficult. For cracking the email writing, just make sure you use all the words and phrases provided in the question in exactly the same order as they are given and preferably the same tense. Begin the email by writing Dear and end with the word Regards. Use only those names that have been provided in the question. Do not write less than 50 words and preferably not more than 100 words as well. Do not make grammatical or spelling mistakes. Use simple words.

If you are thorough with the previous placement papers of TCS, you can easily crack the aptitude section. Solve all the TCS aptitude questions given in Indiabix.com. It is highly probable that you will get either the same or similar problems. If you want, you can also go through the book by Dr. R. S. Agarwal.

The C McQ questions will be based on your preliminary knowledge of the C concepts. They will be easy but some may be tricky. Go through the practice questions of Indiabix.com and also the book Test your C skills by Yashavant P. Kanetkar.

To solve the programming section, login to your Campus Commune accounts. There will be a section, Open Sesame, where you will find a practice problem/program. The actual question will be like that. You have to take input via command line arguments and you will not be allowed to use scanf() etc. There will be maximum 10 attempts to solve the problem. My program was to take a binary number as input and display its decimal equivalent. Follow stackoverflow.com for programming practice.

Our results were declared in the early morning of 24th September. 498 students had appeared. Of them, 312 were shortlisted.

Our interviews were scheduled on 9th October. There were 7 onternship holders who were selected for direct interview on 11th October.

My interview took place at around 1 pm. They asked me the following questions:

Introduce yourself.
Explain your final year project.
What is the use of static keyword?
Why is main() the port of entry for the execution of a Java application?
What is the difference between method overloading and method overriding?
What is the role of JVM?
Why do you think Java is superior to C?

After that, the HR interview began at the same place.

Explain why your graduation grades are much less compared to your board marks.
Why TCS?
If you are relocated to a remote village in Chennai, will you go?
If you are made to work in a project involving PASCAL, will you do it?
What will you do if you are facing any problem in your project but your seniors don't help you?

The results were declared at 1 am on 12th October. Out of 319 students, 183 were selected. 14 students had been placed earlier from CodeVita. So, in all 197 of us were placed.

A few tips:

Don't praise the company unnecessarily.

Be honest. Don't tell anything that you don't know or you haven't done.
Prepare your projects well.

Make sure you have prepared at least 2 subjects of your curriculum and 1 programming language thoroughly.

Go through the TCS url, www.tcs.com. It will help you in answering questions related to their latest projects and achievements.

All the best.
